Punta Cana is a golfer's paradise, with a dozen golf courses in Punta Cana and almost 30 in the whole of the Dominican Republic - they are often remodeled to be the best they can be, so check the current status of the one you wish to play at before going (equipment rental is provided).
The Bavaro Golf Course at Barcelo Bavaro Beach is renowned for being re-designed by Pete Dye (one of the world's leading golf course designers) in 2010. The course features a mangrove forest, 25 inland lakes, and 122 strategically positioned bunkers.
The Punta Cana Golf Club, also designed by Pete Dye, is another wonderful option, offering expansive views of the Atlantic Ocean. Many of the Punta Cana Resorts are golf resorts with "guests only" courses.
